Keep Pets Safe & Secure During the Festivities
EL PASO, Texas—With Halloween right around the corner, it’s important to keep our furry friends safe amidst the fun and excitement. El Paso Animal Services reminds pet owners to follow these essential safety tips to ensure a safe and stress-free celebration for everyone:
ID Your Pets: With frequent doorbell rings, open doors, and spooky guests, pets may try to slip outside. Make sure your pets are wearing a collar with up-to-date ID tags, and ensure their microchip information is current to help them get home if they escape.
Create a Safe Space: Halloween can be overwhelming for pets. Set up a quiet room away from the commotion, complete with their favorite toys, to reduce stress and keep them safe from potential hazards.
Keep Candy Out of Reach: Chocolate and sugar-free candies are toxic to pets, and candy wrappers can pose choking hazards. Store all human treats safely out of your pets' reach.
Costume Comfort: If your pet isn’t comfortable in a costume, don’t force them into one. Opt for something simple, like a Halloween-themed bandana. If they do wear a costume, make sure it’s safe, non-restrictive, and allows them to move freely.
Watch the Decorations: Keep candles, lit pumpkins, and electrical cords away from curious pets. Chewing or knocking over decorations could lead to injuries, burns, or electrical shock.
Be Seen on Walks: If you’re taking your pet out during trick-or-treating, ensure they’re visible with reflective collars, leashes, or lights.
Know Your Pet: Some pets may become anxious or stressed with the excitement of Halloween. If your pet struggles, consult your vet for calming solutions or products.
If your pet goes missing, visit the El Paso Animal Services Center at 5001 Fred Wilson Ave as soon as possible.
